Brejinho da Costa
Brejinho da Costa Aguardente Vínica Velha Old Wine Brandy
Brejinho da Costa Aguardente Vínica Velha is a Portuguese old wine brandy, a spirit distilled from wine rather than from grape marc, then aged in wood. Where a bagaceira is rustic and direct, an aguardente vínica velha is the rounder, more polished side of Portuguese spirits, the one to pour in a proper glass after a special dinner.
Tasting notes
Aged Portuguese wine brandies usually show an amber colour, aromas of dried fruit, vanilla and toasted wood, and a smooth, warming finish. Give it a few minutes in a tulip glass before the first sip.
Food pairing
Serve it with a bica after dinner, with dark chocolate, roasted almonds and walnuts, dried figs, or a slice of pão de ló. A few drops in a coffee make a very good cheirinho.
About aguardente vínica
Aguardente vínica is Portugal's wine brandy: wine is distilled into a clear spirit, which is then aged in oak casks for years. The same grape spirit is also what Port producers add to stop fermentation and keep the natural sweetness in the wine.
