Villa Oeiras Carcavelos 12 Year Old Red

Villa Oeiras Carcavelos 12 Year Old Red is a Portuguese fortified wine from Carcavelos, on the coast just west of Lisbon, made from Castelão, Preto Martinho and Trincadeira and aged twelve years in oak. Carcavelos is Lisbon's own historic sweet wine, far rarer than Port or Madeira, and this red version is a real curiosity for your glass.

Tasting notes

Long barrel ageing gives Carcavelos notes of caramel, roasted nuts, cocoa and baking spice, with a lively acidity that keeps the sweetness in check. At around 18.5% it is warming but never heavy.

Food pairing

Sip it after dinner with pudim flan, toucinho do céu or a dark chocolate tart. It is also good with blue cheese, aged sheep's cheese or a bowl of roasted almonds.

About Villa Oeiras

Villa Oeiras was founded in 1983 by the municipality of Oeiras and the Ministry of Agriculture to save Carcavelos, Portugal's smallest appellation. Its wines age in the old cellars of the Marquês de Pombal's palace in Oeiras.
