Salina Rio Maior
Salina Rio Maior Flor de Sal 250 g
Pickup currently not available
Salina Rio Maior Flor de Sal 250 g is a Portuguese flor de sal from the inland salt pans of Rio Maior, where salt is made from an underground spring of brine. It is a curious and very Portuguese salt, made far from the sea, and a fine way to finish fish, vegetables and grilled meat.
Flavour and texture
Flor de sal is the thin layer of crystals that forms on top of the salt pans and is skimmed off by hand. These flakes are fine and crunchy, with a clean, mild saltiness that dissolves quickly on the tongue and lets the flavour of the food come forward.
Food pairing
Add it at the end of cooking: on grilled sardines, a steak, roast vegetables, tomatoes with olive oil, boiled potatoes or a soft-boiled egg. Serve with a glass of Lisbon region white or a light red.
About the Rio Maior salt pans
The salt pans of Rio Maior lie inland, about 30 km from the sea, north of Santarém. Salt has been made here for centuries from an underground well of brine about seven times saltier than the ocean, spread in shallow pans and dried by the sun. In 2025 Sal de Rio Maior was granted EU Protected Designation of Origin status.
