Ginja Deluxe, Portuguese Sour Cherry Liqueur

Ginja Deluxe is a Portuguese sour cherry liqueur, the traditional ginja that Lisbon locals sip after lunch. It is a small, sweet taste of Portugal, and one of the first drinks every visitor to Lisbon should try.

Tasting notes

Ginja is made by steeping ginja sour cherries in alcohol with sugar. It is known for its deep ruby colour, ripe and sour cherry flavour, a hint of almond from the stones and a sweet, warming finish.

Food pairing

Sip it with dark chocolate, a pastel de nata or a slice of cherry cake.

About ginja

Ginja, or ginjinha, is one of the great Portuguese traditions. In Lisbon it is served in small glasses at kiosks around Rossio, and in Óbidos and Alcobaça, north of the capital, it is made from local sour cherries.
