Convento dos Cardaes Plum Jam à Bulgária 250 ml is a Portuguese plum jam from Lisbon, from the 17th century Convento dos Cardaes. A deep, fruity jar for breakfast, cakes and cheese.

Flavour and texture

Plum jam is rich and dark, with a sweet and slightly tart fruitiness and a soft, spreadable texture. Its Portuguese name on the jar is Doce de Ameixa à Bulgária.

Food pairing

On toast with salted butter, in a crêpe, or with a mature sheep's cheese or a slice of Serra da Estrela. Pour a ruby Port or a tawny alongside.

About the Convento dos Cardaes

The Convento dos Cardaes, on Rua do Século in Lisbon, was founded in 1681 for Discalced Carmelite nuns and came through the 1755 earthquake. Since the late 19th century it has been home to an institution caring for women with special needs, with the help of Dominican sisters. Its jams and biscuits are sold to support the house, so every jar does a little good.
